DVI-I (Digital Visual Interface): another long-lived video interface

Here are their numbers: DVI-A, -D and -I, plus their varieties. If we are talking about the most advanced “Di-Vi-I” standard, then we are talking about the analog-digital DVI-I Dual Channel - this very specification is built into most PCs.

DVI has recently come to replace VGA, which was rapidly becoming obsolete in the mid-2000s. The ability to transmit both analogue and digital signals, the promotion of great (at that time) resolutions and high frequencies, the presence of inexpensive competitors: DVI can still serve as a standard today. Allowing something more than minimally comfortable on today's FullHD is increasingly common in inexpensive computer systems. The increase in megapixels will end and the serious capacity of DVI. Without going into technical detail, it is clear that the peak versatility of DVI does not allow displaying images of separate sizes above 2560 x 1600 at a reasonable frequency (more than 60 Hz).

  • transmission of sound (like multi-channel!) simultaneously from video - goodbye, the need to buy around the speakers for TV;

  • support everywhere - processors, zombie boxes, projectors, video recorders, game consoles - it’s hard to imagine technology without an HDMI connector;

  • 3D picture. Yes, it is possible at the same time with high resolutions (HDMI 4b and 2.0 versions).

The prospects for HDMI are very promising - developments will continue, in 2013 the specifications of version 2.0 were adopted: this standard is limited by the old wire connectors, but supports ever greater values ​​of permission and others "tastier" possibility.

DisplayPort (DP): a connector that is only becoming ubiquitous

And DisplayPort is still ringing loudly.

Many computers have rarely been equipped with this direct competitor to HDMI. I - regardless of the fact that everyone has a good DisplayPort: and support for even higher resolutions along with a stereo signal; and audio transmission; and a significant double dart. It's important for distributors to pay less to HDMI licensing: there's no need to pay standard distributors the 15-25 cents that HDMI licensers have to pay.

Roz'em DP was simply not spared in the early days of sleep. In addition, computers are increasingly equipped with a pair of Display Ports according to the current standard version 1.4. And on this basis, another most popular standard with great prospects was born: the younger brother of the Display Port.

Mini DP (Mini DisplayPort)

Together with HDMI and VGA, the Mini DisplayPort connector will be used on both computers and laptops. It has all the advantages of its “big brother”, plus miniature dimensions – an ideal solution for laptops, ultrabooks that are constantly thinning, and for smartphones and tablets.

Transmission of an audio signal, so as not to purchase additional devices to the monitor? Please, how many channels do you have? Stereoscopy at 4K? So, let the interface go and you will end up straining all your electronic communications. Crazy? Transitors to the market are highly tempting, unlike any other rose. Perhaps? The Mini DP standard is alive and well.

Thunderbolt: exotic monitor connection options

Yes. Every now and then, Apple and Intel retailers are pushing the fast, universal, but even expensive Thunderbolt interface.

What about Thunderbolt for monitors? Nutrition is deprived in any river without a reasonable connection.

In practice, monitors with this type of support do not hyper-frequency very often, and there is great doubt about the validity of Thunderbolt for transmitting video signals. What a fashion for everything “Yabluchna”.

Unfortunately, outside the scope of the article, the ability to connect screens to a computer (and supply electricity to them!) via USB 3.0 (or, even better, 3.1) is lost. How to connect a new monitor to an old computer?

An “old computer” is most often referred to as a PC with a single port - VGA or DVI. If a new monitor (or TV) absolutely does not want to work with such a port, then you need to add an inexpensive adapter - from VGA to HDMI, from Mini DP to DVI, etc. - Options are anonymous.

With the use of different adapters, there may be insecurity (for example, through VGA it is impossible to transmit sound or images with a particularly high degree of separation), but this scheme can be used correctly and reliably.

Video signal without darts (WiDi)!

There will be such interfaces, anyway. Intel Wireless Display (also known as WiDi, or “Wi-Dai,” although it sounded wonderful to the Russian reader): an adapter costing about 30 dollars is connected to the USB connector of the TV or monitor (as the technology is supported by the device).

The signal is strengthened via Wi-Fi, and there is video on the screen. However, this is only in theory, but in practice, with the help of these codes, the walls between receiving and transmitting become apparent. The technology is good, and there are prospects in it - but not much else yet.

Another drone-free video interface is AirPlay from Apple. The essence is practically the same as with WiDI from Intel. A little expensive, not very reliable, far from practical.

The solution is larger, but still less wide - Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDi). It's not exactly Wi-Fi, although droneless technology is very similar. The key feature is the proprietary method of protection from crossing codes, blocking and preventing.

Connecting multiple monitors simultaneously

From the task of attaching the main or additional screen, you need to follow the instructions: the monitor is connected to a PC or laptop, no less than a flash drive. There is only one correct way to connect the monitor to the computer: the connector simply does not reach the connector, which is not intended for any purpose.

An important function of current video cards and operating systems is the ability to connect multiple monitors to one signal device (PC, laptop). The practicality of the bark is great, and there are two different options.

1. Image cloning mode

The main computer screen is in default mode. At the same time, the images are completely duplicated on a large-diagonal TV and/or projector. All you need to do is connect the video cable to both the large screen and the projector. Sound is transmitted simultaneously from images when using the same jacks (HDMI, Mini DP).

2. Multi-screen mode

The number of monitors is steadily growing - unless you suddenly find a task for which you would like a wider screen. You can type text manually if you have an additional display as the main one. “Gap” - the frames of the screens in practice are no more important than the frames of the eyepieces - you simply don’t notice them through the ridges. If you like to play around with just a few monitors, gamers who are tired of the gaming process will drink much more for such schemes. Before speech, AMD video cards support up to 6 monitors simultaneously (Eyefinity technology has accumulated a lot of noise in the IT department since the 5th edition).

How to connect the 2nd monitor to the computer? Insert the plug into the cable - everything will disappear, the image will instantly be “swallowed” by another screen. It seems that this did not happen, because additional adjustments are required / a different mode is required for the graphics driver of the video card. To get into this program, just right-click on the Intel, Nvidia or AMD video driver icon - depending on which video adapter is installed on your PC, and select the "Adjustment" item. The video adapter icon is always present in the Windows Panel, and even in all cases – the Windows tray is almost a year old.

DVI is a standard for interface and output connector that is used for transmitting video to digital display devices, such as rare crystal monitors, televisions and projectors.

Since the signal transmitted over a DVI cable is digital and does not require additional re-conversion, the maximum cable extension that is stuck does not need to be exceeded by 5 meters.

The DVI video interface can be of two types: 24-pin and 29-pin.

Today's video cards have not one, but several ports for connection, so that it is possible to connect more than one monitor at the same time. Among these ports are both old and rarely revised, and current.

VGA is short for video graphics array (an array of pixels) or video graphics adapter (video adapter). What appeared back in 1987, 15-pin and, as a rule, blue color, intended for outputting a strictly analog signal, the strength of which, apparently, can be influenced by several other factors (double-draw, for example), including the video card itself, therefore the image brightness through this port on different video cards may vary slightly.

Until LCD monitors become widespread, this connector is not the only possible option for connecting a monitor to a computer. It is also used in low-cost monitor models, as well as in projectors and some game consoles, for example, in the latest generation of Xbox consoles from Microsoft. It is not recommended to connect via a new Full HD monitor, otherwise the picture will be blurry and unclear. The maximum allowance for a VGA cable for a separate installation 1600 x 1200 is 5 meters.

DVI (variations: DVI-I, DVI-A and DVI-D)

It is used to transmit a digital signal that is replaced by VGA. Suitable for connecting high-definition monitors, TVs, as well as modern digital projectors and plasma panels. The maximum cable length is 10 meters.

The more separate the pictures are, the smaller they can be transferred without wasting space (without the need for special equipment).

There are three types of DVI ports: DVI-D (digital), DVI-A (analog) and DVI-I (combinations):

To transmit digital data, use the Single-Link or Dual-Link format. Single-Link DVI replaces one TMDS transmission, and Dual-Link doubles the bandwidth and allows you to display a separate screen larger than 1920 x 1200, such as 2560 x 1600. Therefore, for large monitors with a large number of components or for displaying stereo images, you will definitely need at least DVI Dual-Link or HDMI version 1.3 (about a few times lower).

HDMI

There is also a digital output. The main advantage of DVI is that HDMI, in addition to transmitting a video signal, can transmit a multi-channel digital audio signal. Audio and visual information is transmitted over one cable at the same time. Initially developed for television and cinema, and later gaining widespread popularity among PC owners. It is possible to use DVI with the help of a special adapter. The maximum extension of a standard HDMI cable is up to 5 meters.

HDMI is a major failure to standardize universal connections for digital audio and video add-ons, thereby taking away the pressure from the electronics giants (companies such as Sony, Hitachi, Panasonic, Toshiba, Thomson, Philips), etc. The result is that most current devices for displaying high-quality images may require one HDMI output.

DisplayPort

Having applied for an add-on to DVI and HDMI, since Single-Link DVI can transmit a signal separately up to 1920x1080, and Dual-Link up to a maximum of 2560x1600, it also allowed 3840x2400 for DVI, which is not available. The maximum capabilities of DisplayPort do not differ in any way from the same HDMI - 3840 x 2160, which still has unobvious advantages. One of these, for example, is those that companies will not have to pay a tax for the use of their DisplayPort devices - which, before speaking, is obligatory, as it is about HDMI.

As you can see, DisplayPort’s main competitor is HDMI. DisplayPort has an alternative technology for protecting data that is transmitted through theft, but it is called differently - DPCP (DisplayPort Content Protection). DisplayPort has the same thing as HDMI - it supports 3D images and transmits audio content. However, DisplayPort audio transmission is only available one-way. And the transmission of Ethernet data to DisplayPort is impossible.

The value of DisplayPort is influenced by the fact that it also has adapters for all popular outputs, such as DVI, HDMI, VGA (which is important). For example, from HDMI there is only one adapter - to DVI. So, if there is only one DisplayPort connector on the video card, you can connect an old monitor with only one VGA input.

Before speaking, it is true that more and more video cards are being released without a VGA output. The maximum length of the DisplayPort cable can be up to 15 meters. However, the maximum distance DisplayPort can be transmitted to a riser is no more than 3 meters – which is most often needed to connect the monitor and video card.

S-Video (TV/OUT)

On older video cards, there is sometimes an S-Video connector, or, as it is also called, S-VHS. Use it to output an analog signal on older TVs, however, the amount of image that is transmitted goes to the larger VGA. With a short cable connection via S-Video, images are transmitted without conversion over a distance of up to 20 meters. Nowadays it is very rare to see blurring (on video cards).
