Sony Xperia Z4 is the "surprise" flagship of 2015, which was presented on April 20 in a version for the Japanese market. In other countries, it will presumably be named Z3 + or Z3s. At the same time, the camera modules were updated, but the resolution increased only for the front one - from 2 to 5 megapixels.
The beginning of September is not only an intensified yearning for the past summer, but also joy because of the newly presented new products from the world of high technologies. Will this year be an exception? Of course not, and there is a lot of evidence for this statement. For example, about two weeks ago at the event, representatives of the South Korean company Samsung announced the approach of the announcement. In addition, a whole bunch of new smartphones will be presented by the Japanese Sony, as reported by the manufacturer's employees by mistake. What will they be? We'll find out right now.
You might not have noticed this, but the mobile industry has gone through another smooth turn in its development path, thereby determining its further route for a long time. We are talking about biometric scanners. Today, finding a flagship smartphone without a fingerprint sensor is as difficult as finding one without a QuadHD display. The development of mobile operating systems in general and mobile payments in particular elevates the fingerprint scanner to the category of mandatory device components. Naturally, manufacturers fighting for the top segment of the market have long ago implemented this in their devices. But there are also those among A-brands who believe that in the new model it is quite enough to change the number in the name.
The Japanese company Sony is one of the few manufacturers to which you can deservedly make sharp jokes. The fact is that the engineers of the technology giant release flagships too often, but the differences between them are too few. What is the display resolution, which has not changed since the very first representative of the notorious line. It would seem that the solution is excellent and modern, and therefore there is simply no reason to complain. In fact, everything is somewhat different. The edges of the Xperia Z4 Tablet have become even more "soft" - plastic and rounded, therefore, thanks to the pleasant tactile sensations, it is quite comfortable to hold the device in your hands. However, this trend is already familiar from the 8-inch.
The metal corners, which are called shock-absorbing, are made of stainless steel and are designed to somehow protect the tablet from falling. For the rear panel of the device, a rough matte plastic is used, which collects "greasy" fingerprints, however, and less willingly than the usual soft-touch coating. The entire front panel is still covered with tempered mineral glass with an oleophobic coating.
In accordance with the requirements of IP65 / IP68 standards, the new tablet is reliably protected from dust and moisture. In particular, he is not afraid of even jets of water under low pressure (IPx5) and an hour and a half in water at a depth of 1.5 meters (IPx8). In order to somewhat cool the "hot" heads who are immediately going to run to the beach or the pool, we note that immersion in salt water is generally excluded, and after the device gets into chlorinated water, it will then have to be rinsed with fresh water. As for the protection against ingress of solid particles, it has become even more rigid compared to the Xperia Z2 Tablet, since dustproof (IP5x) has been replaced by complete dustproof (IP6x).

Triluminos and X-Reality, adapted for mobile devices, migrated from the Z-line smartphones to the tablet. In a nutshell, Triluminos is usually explained by replacing white LEDs in the display backlight with blue ones (in fact, there is a rather complex physics that operates with quantum dots). In turn, the X-Reality algorithms "conjure" over the image itself, from the signal of which several components are preliminarily extracted, including texture, contour, contrast and color, and each of them is analyzed and processed separately. The result of such a cool "batch" should be more natural color rendition and improved picture quality.
In practice, the screen of the new tablet is distinguished not only by good anti-glare properties, but also by large viewing angles, as well as high contrast and a good margin of brightness. And the color reproduction is subjectively pretty good - the colors are bright and juicy, almost like on an AMOLED display. The developers have not forgotten about the oleophobic coating.
The brightness of the display can be adjusted manually, or you can use adaptive adjustment, which works from the light sensor quite correctly. When viewing photos and videos, the settings offer you to use the maximum brightness mode, and the smart backlight control function will automatically detect if the tablet is in your hand. It is convenient to wake up the backlight with a double tap on the screen.
Another option in the settings allows you to independently adjust the color temperature. The tablet's screen supports multi-touch, and the AnTuTu Tester and MultiTouch Tester test programs confidently recognize ten simultaneous touches.
Taking photos outdoors on a 10.1-inch tablet is not a great idea. In addition, others may misunderstand you. On the other hand, the possibility of photo and video recording of events will come in handy, as they say, in any "fire" case. One way or another, the photo-module of the main camera of the Xperia Z4 Tablet has not changed much compared to its predecessor. There is the same back-illuminated 8MP Exmor RS sensor, autofocus and digital zoom. But the front camera, following the general fashion, has become more advanced. The resolution of the Exmor R sensor has grown from 2.2 to 5 megapixels. True, there is no autofocusing here, and the flash is absent as well as on the main photo module.
The image resolution for the main camera is 3264x2448 pixels (8 MP) with an aspect ratio of 4: 3 and 3264x1836 pixels (6 MP) for a 16: 9 wide frame. The camera can also record Full HD video (1080p) at a frame rate of 30 fps, while clips are saved in MP4 container files (video - MPEG4, sound - AAC). Several examples of photos can be viewed.
In turn, the front camera allows you to make "selfies" of an acceptable quality with a resolution of 2592x1458 (3.7 MP; 16: 9) and 2592x1944 (5 MP; 4: 3) pixels, respectively. Of course, it does a great job with video calls, and, like the main camera, it supports Full HD recording (1080p @ 30fps).
The interface of the "Camera" program is well known to all owners of gadgets of the Xperia family. Of the ten main photo applications, first of all it is worth noting the built-in "Super Auto", where the optimization of shooting parameters is performed automatically. But the "Manual" photo application provides a set of necessary adjustments, including exposure steps and white balance, as well as predefined scenes (presets such as "Portrait", "Beach", "Night Scene", etc.).
With nothing to do, you can indulge in apps that offer artistic as well as AR effects and entertainment.
The holes for the grilles of the front stereo speakers are made so inconspicuous that at first it seems that the tablet is simply "ventriloquism". Nevertheless, a fairly good sound quality and a decent headroom are provided. Among the usual settings is the "enhancer" ClearAudio +, the inclusion of which adjusts the sound to the preset and, as it is considered, optimal parameters. To equalize the volume of all media content, you should check the dynamic normalizer option and determine the microphone sensitivity (automatic, high, medium, low).
The playback quality is largely determined by the type of headphones connected. Some of them are required to support digital noise reduction. Others let you listen to music in High-Resolution Audio format (DSD, WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC files). When a song is recorded in a different format, the DSEE HX (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) technology is designed to correct the situation, restoring the part of the frequency spectrum lost in MP3 files. Well, when using the Sony LDAC codec in the gadget, high sound quality is guaranteed even in wireless mode. Perhaps for these reasons, there are simply no headphones included with the Xperia Z4 Tablet. And they would be useful, at least as a shortwave antenna for the built-in FM tuner with RDS.
Filling, performance
The first among tablets Xperia Z4 Tablet received the most powerful platform at the time of release Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 (MSM8994) platform, where eight 64-bit processor cores are united by the ARM big.LITTLE architecture.
At the same time, four energy-efficient cores ARM Cortex-A53 (1.5 GHz) can easily cope with normal loads, and four more powerful ARM Cortex-A57 (2.0 GHz) are included in the work only when necessary. Of the 32 GB of declared internal memory, the volume of which has doubled (Xperia Z2 Tablet - 16 GB), approximately 20.9 GB is available. It can be expanded by an additional 128 GB using a microSDXC card. For some reason, the external USB drive on our device did not connect, although such a possibility (USB-OTG) is provided in the settings.
The set of wireless communications, among other things, includes a 2-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac (2.4 and 5 GHz) module with MIMO support, as well as NFC and Bluetooth 4.1 interfaces. But the infrared port for controlling home electronics, as in the Xperia Z2 Tablet, is no longer here.
After inserting a nanoSIM card into the corresponding slot, the Xperia Z4 Tablet (model SGP771) works on Russian 2G, 3G and 4G cellular networks. For obvious reasons, this tablet does not have a "conversational" speaker. The Xperia Z4 Tablet earned 5,679 points in the AnTuTu Tester program. The test set of MP4 and HD movies ran continuously for less than 6 hours at full brightness.
To extend the battery life, you should lower the backlight level as much as possible, and also activate the Stamina power saving mode in the settings. In this case, according to the manufacturer, it will be possible to view HD videos for up to 17 hours without recharging.
Software
The Xperia Z4 Tablet runs on the Google Android 5.0.2 operating system wrapped in a proprietary Xperia shell. This launcher has quite carefully approached the "lollipop" interface design, where it easily got along without any annoying "frills".
From the tablet lock screen, you can access the Phone (SGP771 only) and Camera applications. Various notifications are also available here. Swiping to the right in the application menu, along with the ordering of icons, opens quick settings with functions for finding and removing programs, as well as the ability to download new ones from Google Play and Sony Select. By tapping the touch button "Recent applications", not only they are called, but also the "Favorites bar", on which you can place shortcuts for programs called "small" (including a browser, calculator, calendar, mail).

Among the accessories recommended for the Xperia Z4 Tablet, it is worth noting the BKB50 Bluetooth keyboard with a built-in touchpad, which is sold not only as a set, but also separately (9,990 rubles). With a special swivel joint, the BKB50 quickly and easily converts a tablet into a laptop. The ability to change the angle between the device and the keyboard within the range of 0-130 degrees provides the necessary comfort when working. The organization of the Bluetooth pairing is taken over by the NFC interface with one-touch connection, and the 400 mAh battery built into the keyboard is designed, according to the manufacturer, for 8-hour daily use for one and a half months without recharging. Purchase, conclusions
The Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet lives up to expectations. The developers managed to fit not only a powerful processor, but also a rather capacious battery in a case of record low weight and thickness. At the same time, the entire filling is reliably protected from water and dust. A bright 2K screen and high-quality sound deserve a special mention of the new tablet.
More nitpicking than significant shortcomings are the lack of an IrDA and the slow filling of the battery through regular charging (you can still recall the lack of a flash on the main camera). But the obvious disadvantage of the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet was its price: model SGP712 (Wi-Fi only) - 41,990 rubles, and SGP771 (Wi-Fi + LTE) - 46,990 rubles. At the same time, the set of the latest model with the BKB50 Bluetooth keyboard will cost 52,990 rubles. Even taking into account the overvalued exchange rate, such pricing seems to have been too reinsured.
Nevertheless, among the "waterfowl" the novelty has no competitors. At the same time, only the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, which debuted last year, can claim the title of a real rival, for which they now ask an average of 25,450 rubles. Among its features are not only a weaker processor, half the amount of internal memory (16 GB) and a simple front camera (2 MP), but also a fairly large battery (7900 mAh) and a bright 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display ...
