Why do you need such a function

The reason why one or another Internet user is forced to look for an online photo editor for application may be different. But, as experience shows, this is usually caused precisely by the need to quickly resize photo.

And this is usually the case. Let's say someone needs to upload an editable image to a website. For example, as an avatar on VKontakte. As a rule, on most resources in the global network for images that are uploaded to the service, there is a restriction on its size. And this in a specific case means that you need to resize the photo online.

You can't do without it. However, the limitation is not limited to dimensions. The limitation also applies to image weight. That is, the problem requires such a solution when you need to reduce the photo. And this is very easy to do using the online photo editor.

But the function "enlarge photo" is used when it is necessary to increase the size of the image. As well as reducing a photo, this function is used when someone very often processes an image.

For a more detailed description of the popular service, one should also mention such a "chip" as photos in the style of Instagram. That is, in this case, the service provides an opportunity not only resizebut also to give the desired look to the photos. Moreover, we are talking about those cases when you do not have a mobile device and an Instagram account with you.

We assure you that processing photos on a personal computer is much more convenient and enjoyable. The Instagram style photo feature works the same way as cropping photos online. This means the following: you need to upload a photo, apply effects and then save it to your computer. So, in particular, you can make the effect of an old photo from a regular photo.

How often, when looking at photos on a computer, we threw out cool frames because they turned out to be too small in size and of poor quality. But with the help of special programs, you can save almost any image!

Improving image quality is a very voluminous topic. To improve the quality of a photo in Photoshop, color correction, sharpening, retouching and many other operations can be applied. All of them require certain skills and mastery of special techniques.

But there are also less complicated methods when you just need to enlarge the image without losing quality. Below we will take an example of how to improve the quality of a photo if you need to enlarge a photo without losing quality.

How to enlarge a photo without losing quality

Everyone has come across a small, low quality image. In such images, when magnified, pixels are clearly visible, the points from which the raster image is built.

Enlarging the image by stretching it free transforming will only worsen the situation.

For this tutorial, we will be working in Photoshop CC 2017. But first, we'll look at the method for other, older versions of Photoshop. And then we'll show you how Photoshop CC 2017 can do the whole procedure automatically.

Open the image in Photoshop. Now we will gradually increase it in several passes. It should be noted right away that you can enlarge the photo and raise the quality, but with a size limitation.

Press the keyboard shortcut Alt + Ctrl + I... We will open a window "Image size"... It is necessary that between Width and Height a paperclip was pressed. Then the width and height will change proportionally.

Enlarge the image twice, 20% each time. To do this, in the drop-down list opposite "Widths" change pixels to percentage (Pixel / Percent), and the numerical value from 100% to 120% and click Ok... Then we call the image size window again ( Alt + Ctrl + I) and increase by 20%.

We have increased the image size from 950x632 pixels to 1368x910 pixels.

For a visual comparison, let's approximate the original image (950x632 pixels) and the resulting one (1368x910 pixels).

We enlarged the image by almost one and a half times and even improved the quality. As you can see, pixelation is less noticeable if you zoom in on the image.

It remains to refine the result. Apply filter "Smart Sharpen" to the resulting image.

We go: Filters / Sharpening / Smart Sharpening / Filter / Sharpen / Smart Sharpen... Moving the sliders, we select the appropriate sharpness. If you left-click and hold the image in the small preview window, you can see the image before applying the effect. The difference is palpable. Especially noticeable is the smooth color transition (without cubes) on the lenses of the glasses. We have completely removed the noise by moving the slider all the way to the right. The radius of sharpness was taken at 0.3 pixels, the effect was applied at 79%.

Let's compare the results again.

Left - original image, center - after enlarging, right - with applied "Smart Sharpness".

After application "Smart Sharpness" the noise is gone, the image is clearer.

Here is our result.

Now let's enlarge the photo and improve its quality using automatic tools in Photoshop 2017.

Open the image in Photoshop, press the keyboard shortcut Alt + Ctrl + I... We will open a window Image Size... Pay attention to point "Fit To" / Dimensions... Expand this list. In it you will see presets for image enlargement / reduction without loss of quality. We will use automatic selection (the second item in the list). In the window that opens, select the item "Good" and press Ok... You should not choose the best one, because the original image is of too low quality, and there is no point in enlarging it so much.

Please note that if we managed to select to enlarge the image from 950x632 pixels and a resolution of 96 pixels / inch to 1368x910 pixels with the same resolution, then the program increased to 1969x1310 pixels with a resolution of 199 pixels / inch.

Apply Smart Sharpness.

Now you yourself are convinced that you can enlarge the picture without losing quality, and even improve the quality of the photo.

It should be noted that this method can be useful not only for enlarging and improving small photos. For example, you need to provide a photo for an Internet resource or for printing in a publishing house. At the same time, your photo is of excellent quality and large size, but the publishing house needs an even larger size. By applying the described method of enlarging the picture and improving its quality, you will get excellent results. After all, large photos with good quality will go through this procedure much easier.

The procedure is extremely simple. Don't give up on small pictures. Give them a second chance.

If you plan to post your photos on the Internet, you may need to lighten their weight so that they meet the requirements of a particular site. In addition, even if the site does not have restrictions on the size and weight of photos, huge photos on a web page slow down its loading and irritate users viewing the page. You may need to reduce the size of the photo to lighten the weight. How can you make a photo easy to download and view without degrading its quality?

You will need

  • graphic editor Adobe Photoshop

Instructions

Open the photo in the graphics editor Adobe Photoshop. The photo will not open in 100% size. In the title of the photo, which is automatically generated by the program, you can see the percentage in which the photo is displayed on the screen. If you want to see the real size, press the key combination “Ctrl + 1” or “Ctrl + Alt + 0”. This way you can also evaluate the quality of the photo. How clear does it look at full size, does it have defects?

Using the key combinations “Ctrl +” and “Ctrl-” you can increase and decrease the size of a photo in the program window without affecting its actual size and quality. This will help you determine what real size the photo would be suitable for submitting it to your site so that it looks good on your page. Look at the percentage size of the photo indicated in the title of this photo.

Now use the menu item “Image - Image Size”. This can also be done by the “Alt + Ctrl + I” key combination. You will see a dialog box with which you can control the resolution and size, and therefore the weight of the photo.

Since we are interested in preparing a photo for publication on the Internet, we will use the upper part of the dialog box, where you can select the size of the photo in pixels or in percent. If you have specific guidelines for the size of your photo in pixels, use this option. If you chose the size of the photo by changing it in the program window, according to point 2, enter the number you have defined in percentage in the window.

You will see that the size of the photo on the screen is reduced. Press again “Ctrl + 1” or “Ctrl + Alt + 0” to see its real size. Now you can save the photo for use on the Internet. To do this, we need the menu item “File - Save for web and devices”.

You will see a dialog box to save the file. Pay attention to its top right corner. There you can select the file format for use on the Internet - for example, jpeg, and its quality: from low (Low) to maximum (Maximum). For the best quality / weight ratio, we recommend the “High” or “Very High” storage mode.

You can see the weight of the photo and the estimated speed of its loading in the lower left corner of the dialog box, right below the photo preview window. Keep track of this parameter and correlate it with the quality of the photo in the preview window in order to choose the optimal photo saving mode for you.

note

Be sure to save the modified photo under a new name in case you still need the full-size version of the photo, for example, for printing.

Sometimes computer users need to reduce a large photo, for example, to use it as an avatar on a forum or a picture for a blog post. This can be done using any free image editor, for example, the standard Microsoft Paint.

Instructions

Click the "Start" button and from the "All Programs" - "Accessories" menu select Paint. Click the "Open" button and then click on the photo that you would like to change. In the edit menu or toolbar, you will see the Resize button.

Choose how you want to resize - pixels or percent. Specify the desired values \u200b\u200bfor the height and width of the image. You can also use the Maintain Aspect Ratio option to prevent excessive distortion of the picture. In this case, it will automatically fit to the set width or height format.

You can resize only part of the image and then crop the excess. Select the "Select" tool on the left side panel and use the mouse to set the borders of the image. After that, immediately go to the resize menu and specify the desired values. Next, click on the upper or lower right corners of the image and, while holding the mouse, drag the edges to fit them under the thumbnail image.

Try resizing the image automatically if you need to, for example, send it as an email attachment. In the menu for creating a new letter, select the "Attach file" option. Click on the folder containing the image you would like to email and click on it. Hold the Crtl key to select more than one photo to send.

Click on the "Image Size" button, which will be next to the name of the uploaded file, and select the "Compress for sending by email" option. As a result, the recipient will receive a letter to which small photos will be attached.

Helpful advice

Just in case, always save the modified image files under different names. If the image doesn't work out the way you wanted, you can change the original version in a different way.

Sometimes, to work with an image, you need to reduce its size. This can be done conveniently and quickly using Paint.net, a free graphics editor.

Sometimes you need to reduce the size of photos on your computer to send them by email to friends or acquaintances. This is necessary, for example, when we take pictures with modern digital cameras, with the help of which very high-quality photos are obtained.

The size of photos with such cameras is very large. And basically, such pictures are necessary for their further editing and high-quality printing.

But, if you need to send any photos by email just to view them on a computer, then there is no need to send large heavy files. This is especially important to take into account if one of the parties does not use fast and unlimited Internet.

Conditional situation

Let's say we have unlimited fast Internet, and our friend, to whom they decided to send photos, has expensive and slow Internet (for example, 2 rubles for 1 MB of information received).

In this case, when sending even 5 photos weighing 4 MB. Sending a message with photos will not give us any special difficulties. But our friend will receive this message with photos for a very long time and will also pay his telecom operator about 40 rubles.

Therefore, just to view the photos on a computer, it is better to use before sending them by email.

Reducing photo size with Paint

There are many ways to reduce the size of a photo. But in this article we will look at how to do this using Paint, which is already included in the Windows operating system. I'll take a look at Paint in Windows 7 (in XP it works the same way).

As an example, I took a photo with my camera with a resolution of 9 mega pixels, and I got a photo with a size of 4.35 MB. I will reduce the size of this photo. To do this, right-click on this file, and select from the additional menu: To open with -> Paint.

The selected file is opened with Paint, in which the original dimensions of the photo are visible:

To reduce the size of the photo, click on the button: Resize (as shown in the picture above) and in the drop-down menu select the change in percentage or pixels. I select in pixels, leave a check mark: Maintain proportions and resize it horizontally to 1024 (or 1280) pixels. These sizes are enough for a photo to be displayed well on any computer monitor:

To resize a photo in Windows XP, go to the menu Picture-> Stretchand resize as a percentage. Or on the menu Picture-> Attributesand resize in points, for example, as in our case described in this note: 1024 horizontally and 768 vertically.

After resizing, the photo must be saved. To do this, we perform only 3 actions:

  1. In the menu at the top in the left corner with the left mouse button, open the drop-down list for selecting functions;
  2. Hover the cursor over: Save as;
  3. In the additional selection, click on: JPEG image (one of the most common formats):

Next, you need to choose a place to save the modified photo. For example, I have the original photo (for this note) on my desktop. The file is called A photo... When saving, so as not to change the original file, I name the resized file differently (for example, Photo 2) and click Save:

Done! Now, by the properties of the files, we see that using the standard Paint program, we reduced the original size of the photo by 10 times, moreover, when viewing on a computer, the difference in quality is not particularly noticeable:

Other functions of Paint

In Paint, you can not only resize images, but you can also draw, add text, shapes, etc. Experiment with your photos, and if you don't like the result of an action, you can always undo it using the undo button of the last action, which is located in the upper left part of the program window:

soWhen transferring photos over the Internet, I recommend that you always check the size of the transferred photo. By the way, this can be done by right-clicking on the photo and choosing from the menu that appears: Properties.

If the photo is too large, you can resize it, for example, using Paint. To do this, open the file using this program, resize it in%, or horizontally by 1024 (or less) and save it in JPEG format.
