Hello

I have never traveled alone. I was scared that at any moment I could get lost or start to miss people. and in general, in order to be active in a new city, you need someone else's neck, which you can sit on if you are afraid to do something yourself.

But now I had a vacation, in the middle of October, when everyone else went on vacation for a long time and worked well. And for me - sit and rack your brains, as it were, to relax in such unauthorized conditions

But I took a chance, collected the money and went to Nizhny Novgorod.

And now my first evening in Nizhny Novgorod, I am sitting in my room and planning a sightseeing route around the city. And suddenly - bang! an ideal thought comes to mind - to urgently say an audio guide.

Do not walk thoughtlessly along the streets of Nizhny.

My smartphone runs on WinPhone OS. I love this operating system, the most important thing does not slow down, but I will not expand on it here. Despite the fact that I like WP, there is a difficulty with its use. And the biggest is the small number of applications compared to Android or iOS.

Therefore, I was afraid that the actual audio guide would not be found. But I was lucky. Absolutely is freei have downloaded izi app traveL.

The fact that free app there is a huge plus for me on WP. For this 1 point application.

The guide works both online and offline. Very convenient for travel to other regions. In order not to waste extra traffic.

One tour weighs about 30-40 mb. Any smartphone can do it.

Another score.

If you enter the application with data transfer enabled, the application will suggest the nearest excursions to you. Their number is not limited by your location. The application will suggest excursions in order of distance from the place of stay.

When you open the application offline, only downloaded tours and museums are offered.

There are several types of tours in the application:

  • walking tour
  • the museum
  • car tour
  • bike tour

Perhaps there are some other options. But I only faced these.

Pass the walking tour in several ways.

  • Enable with the "Start" button
  • just choose any object marked in the tour.

Of course, the first option is preferable. You press the start button and as you get closer to the object, the guide will automatically turn on.

On the map, all automatically passed points are indicated in a pale color. Convenient if you have a very large number of objects on the way.

Guided tour of exhibits and exhibitions in museumsyou will not be able to listen automatically. There are too many objects in a very small area. Therefore, you have to use the list and move along it. The record says where and when to turn, so as not to stray from the sightseeing path.

It is a bit like sightseeing bus tours in large cities.

For the opportunity to listen to not only sightseeing, but also museum excursions. definitely put score.

Guided tours of small museums take 20-40 minutes on average. Information about the duration of the excursion is available at home page guide.

The app is initially set to background mode. Very comfortable, saves battery power. Unlike most applications, it doesn't stop mid-sentence as soon as you click the lock button.

Another well deserved a plus.

Another positive point is a fairly wide geography of the guides. Even in the city where I come from, where, in principle, there is nothing so remarkable, there is one museum guide.

The guide can be used not only when traveling in Russia, but also abroad. The list of countries is large.

In the excursion menu, you can select the language in which this guide will work.

I will add more 2 plusesfor the geography of work and the ability to choose a language.

The advantages, of course, are excellent, but also the disadvantages of the application.

First. Guides to Russian cities are free, at least I haven't come across paid ones, but if you decide to have a nice excursion around the center of Stockholm, you will have to pay about 1.8 euros. not much, it seems, but somehow offensive.

The application site contains audio guides for both museums and street walks. Thus, by visiting the museum, you can explore the city, choosing your route and pace of the walk. Discover popular or little-known landmarks. Captivating stories will help you better understand the culture and history of the city.

Online or offline

Download audio guides at home, in a hotel or via free WiFi in a museum or cafe and you can use them offline - no roaming charges. Automatic start stories on the street using GPS is also available offline.

Interactivity and multimedia

Our interactive audio guides will captivate you with quizzes, photos and videos in your preferred language. During a walk, stories can be launched automatically by GPS, or using QR codes or numbers. It's simple!

Street Tours

Thanks to GPS tracking, stories are automatically turned on when you approach a point of interest. And with built-in maps, you'll never get lost!

Plan your trip

Half the fun of traveling is planning.

Today I want to tell you about two applications - izi.Travel and CityWalks.me, which can help you travel around the world.

As I have written many times, the main navigation tool in our trips is the Maps.Me application (see - the application uses data from the popular www.openstreetmap.org and allows you to download maps for navigation without the Internet. Usually I put all the sights on maps.me in advance that interested me (more precisely, they have already been plotted, I simply additionally marked them with asterisks to make it easier to search), and made a route.

However, competitors do not sleep, and based on the same OpenStreetMap maps, they have developed a separate application CityWalks.me, specially tailored for travelers.

CityWalks.me

The application offers a large selection of different "thematic routes and collections" - as the developers say in more than 200 cities http://www.citywalks.me

CityWalks.me is visually similar to Maps.me, as it uses the same map, but has a built-in "route store" where you can purchase a list of placemarks on the map for a small price, indicating popular themed attractions, such as coffee shops or shops. The TOP 15 attractions package is available for free.

The disadvantages of CityWalks.me, I would attribute the lack of content, i.e. a full-fledged guide. Markers on the map only contain a link to Wikipedia, Instagram or tripadvisor if you don't have mobile internet, you will not be able to read the information.

To the strengths - a large selection of thematic routes. The authors write that they carefully approached their formation, I was not able to check them, since free list TOP15 was fine.

In addition, the application contains general information on the host country. The so-called travel guide including exchange rates, public transport costs, approximate prices for goods, detailed information on airports.

izi.Travel

The izi.Travel service (https://izi.travel/ru) is devoid of the above drawbacks and is perhaps the best suited as a personal guide to attractions - it contains both landmarks of attractions, as well as audio and text tours of them. Tours can be downloaded in advance, then listen to (or read) them without the Internet. According to the developers, more than 2000 cities are listed in their database!

For some tours, the path is indicated, but you can always build your own route, the application determines your current coordinates and tells you when the next attraction is nearby. izi.Travel is perhaps the best I've tried - it works offline, contains landmarks and fairly detailed audio and text guides.

List of ready-made tours in Astana

Some tours are paid, but the price for them is incomparable with the price for the services of a human guide. By the way, you can take part in filling izi.Travel yourself - registration and use is free, you can create tours both in your own city or locality, and in museums and exhibitions.

Tours can be closed or open (public), I came across this service when I was looking for an app for an audio guide to Expo 2017 facilities. It turned out that there was no need to develop anything, everything had already been done long ago. A very convenient service not only for travelers, but also for owners of cultural objects.

During the trip, I used all three applications - Maps.me for large-scale navigation, izi.Travel for visiting attractions, if I could not find something in it, I switched to CityWalks.me.

Probably, similar apps there are many on the market, if you use some useful but little-known services for travelers, please share in the comments.
