Overclocking a video card using EVGA Precision X. Video card The EVGA Precision monitoring and overclocking utility has been updated

The EVGA Precision x utility will help the user to increase the performance in games and heavy applications. No matter how powerful a computer is, its components sooner or later become obsolete. Frame raids in games are falling, and modern professional programs process data much slower. In such a situation, the user has two choices; buy new more modern components or overclock old ones.

Designed for fine-tuning the graphics card. "Sharpened" to a greater extent for NVIDEA video cards in the version from EVGA. But that doesn't mean it won't work with products from other companies. Even owners of older graphics cards will be able to appreciate the capabilities of this program. And they are not limited to increasing the power of GPUs. In addition to many settings, the program allows you to control the temperature of the device.

Overclocking the video card can significantly increase the performance of the video adapter without money investment. However, there are certain risks of this approach, because rash actions can lead to physical damage to the video processor. For this reason, it is recommended not to exceed any parameters above the recommended ones. EVGA Precision software allows you to overclock your graphics card with minimal risk of damage. The utility has restrictions designed to protect against damage to the video adapter by careless user actions.

The utility is intended for fine-tuning video cards manufactured by nVidia GeForce. With built-in tools, you can adjust not only the clock speed of the central video processor, but also the speed of the cooling fan. In recent years, the problem of overheating of video cards has become more and more urgent, this is due to the constantly increasing power of the equipment.

Key features of EVGA Precision X.

Precision IKS is a proprietary utility of the EVGA company, but despite this it works with versions of graphics cards from other manufacturers. Support for even the oldest families of Ge-Force graphics cards, starting with the sixth and ending with the ninth, is officially announced. As for the new generation, the program works with all of them. Even "hundredths" of Ge-Force are supported.

The main function of the program - power increase - is fully implemented here. You can increase not only the processor frequency, but also control the shader unit and memory unit. This is extremely important when you want to get the maximum performance gain. In this regard, the function of monitoring and displaying data on the temperatures of system components on the monitor is useful. If the user has a display for displaying system indicators, the information obtained by the program can be displayed there. After this upgrade, temperatures under load are likely to rise. You can change the scheme of the fans, increase the number of revolutions. If the user uses two video cards in SLI mode, the program will make sure that the load is evenly distributed between the cards. She can also check the status of drivers and the devices themselves.

Benefits

✔ Great opportunities for configuring device parameters.
✔ Availability of the function of monitoring the temperature of the video card and the frame rate in games.
✔ Automatic or manual fan control.

disadvantages

✘ The program does not work with AMD graphics cards.
✘ The Russian version has buttons with English signatures.
✘ The utility starts additional processes for operation, which are then difficult to disable.

P.S. We expect the next (sixth in a row) beta version of MSI Afterburner 3.0.0 to be released in the near future, which will fix problems with non-working gadgets, high CPU load in RTSS.exe and software crashes when launched on MSI R7970 Lightning.

Follow the announcements, as they say.

EVGA Precision updated to version 2.1.2

January 20, 2012

The popular utility EVGA Precision received another minor update, which received the number 2.1.2.

EVGA Precision is one of the successors of RivaTuner, and is designed to monitor the performance of a video card in real time with the output of values \u200b\u200bto the OSD or to external displays, as well as to control the frequencies of the GPU, video memory and voltage control of the GPU and fans.

Two modules have changed in the program. For example, a bug has been fixed in EVGA Voltage Tuner that prevented EVTune from applying settings at Windows startup.

EVGA On-Screen Display has been updated to version 4.3.1. The new version received the following changes:

  • A new settings profile has been added, "Enable Compatibility with Modified Direct3D Libraries", allowing EVGA On-Screen Display Server to dynamically define the execution function for each 3D application setting.
  • Added a new settings profile that allows you to limit the frame rate during the game, which makes it possible to reduce the power consumption of the video card and eliminate frame displacement.
  • Added vector and raster 3D On-Screen Display rendering modes for OpenGL applications.
  • Added a unified independent video memory monitor vendor for cards that do not have a common video driver memory monitoring interface. Switching between unified and general memory monitoring is done by editing the configuration file.

Updated monitoring and overclocking utility EVGA Precision

September 5, 2011

On Friday, EVGA introduced a new version of the popular EVGA Precision v.2.0.4 utility. EVGA Precision is one of the successors of RivaTuner, and is designed to monitor the performance of a video card in real time with the output of values \u200b\u200bto the OSD or to external displays, as well as to control the frequencies of the GPU, video memory and voltage control of the GPU and fans.

Version 2.0.4 of the program has received a huge number of changes.

A list of the most significant ones is given below:
  • The updated SDK made it possible to provide third-party applications with access to monitoring the performance of the video card, as well as changing frequencies and voltages through EVGA Precision. The distribution kit now includes an example of writing such a request to the program.
  • Updated to version 4.2.2 On-Screen Display, which improved the operation of the OSD with the vertex buffer and increased the stability of the program.
  • The skins of the program have been changed to provide support for bitmap fonts.
  • Fixed a bug that caused slots to be overwritten when using multiple OSDs instead of merging slots.
  • Added the ability to capture screen for Direct3D10 and Direct3D11 applications that use a 10-bit RGB and BGR buffer (for example, Dirt 3 and F.3.A.R., respectively).
  • Updated the list of profiles.
  • The alarm sound is now reflected in the Properties column of the active monitoring schedule.
  • The minimum frequency limit has been reduced from 75% to 50%.
  • Incorrect tooltips no longer pop up when the mouse cursor passes over some GUI elements.
  • Added multilingual installer.

There are not many good programs for overclocking video cards left on the network (settings for the highest performance). If your card is from nVIDIA, the EVGA Precision X utility is ideal for optimizing settings for memory and core frequencies, shader units, fan speed and more. There is everything here for serious overclocking of hardware.

The program was created on the basis of RivaTuner, and the development was carried out with the support of the card manufacturer EVGA.

We advise you to see:

All key functions are available in the main window at once. This is the control of the frequency and voltage of the video card, the choice of the cooler rotation scheme, the selection of the maximum allowable temperature. It is enough to add parameters and press “Apply” to apply new parameters.

Any settings can be stored in one of 10 profiles, which are then turned on with one click or by pressing a "hot key".

Additionally, you can adjust the speed of the cooling system or entrust it to the program in automatic mode.

Testing the settings

There is no full-fledged built-in testing in the program, by default the "Test" button is gray (to activate, you need to additionally download EVGA OC Scanner X). However, you can select any other application and watch the indicators in it. In games, you can observe FPS, core frequency and other important parameters of device operation.

In particular, there is such a parameter as "Frame Rate Target", which will stop the number of frames per second to the specified in the settings. This, on the one hand, will save a little energy, and on the other hand, it will give a stable desired FPS figure in games.

Monitoring

After you have slightly increased the frequency and voltage of the video card, you can monitor the status of the video adapter. Here you can evaluate both the indicators of the video card (temperature, frequency, fan speed) and the central processor with RAM.

The indicators can be displayed in the tray (on the right side of the bottom Windows panel), on the screen (even directly in games, along with the FPS indicator), as well as on a separate digital screen on Logitech keyboards. All this is set in the settings menu.

Benefits of the program

  • There is nothing superfluous, just overclocking and monitoring;
  • Nice futuristic interface;
  • Support for the latest operating systems and video cards with DirectX 12;
  • You can create up to 10 profiles of settings and activate them with one key;
  • There is a change of skins.

disadvantages

  • Lack of Russification;
  • There is no support for ATI Radeon and AMD cards (for them there is);
  • The latest version can cause a blue screen, for example, when rendering in 3D Max;
  • Inadequate localization - some buttons are already embedded in the skin and are always displayed in English;
  • Launches extraneous processes for monitoring, which are then difficult to remove.

Before us is a small and generous PC tool for overclocking video cards. The development was carried out on the basis of well-known software and was supported by specialists who knew the details of the process. EVGA Precision X is suitable for both novice users and experienced overclockers.

MSI Core Center.

With that said, there are three different ways to overclock the MSI GeForce GTX 260 Lightning. The first option is to use the D.O.T. function built into the driver, which we have already covered. The second option involves launching the MSI CoreCenter utility, which can be downloaded separately. This utility provides several profiles such as Game / Game, Office / Office, Silence / Silence or Cool / Cool and allows you to monitor (though not adjust) the fan speed.

The third option is to use the AirForce panel and the Lightning software that comes with the graphics card. In our tests, the combination of CoreCenter and Lightning resulted in errors. For example, CoreCenter profiles were not applied correctly when the map was switched to 3D, 2D settings were still active. Since using two different utilities seems to us somewhat redundant, we did a complete reinstallation of the system and decided to use only Lightning. CoreCenter remains a good choice for graphics cards that lack the extravagant features like the AirForce panel with Lightning. Other companies also offer similar utilities, such as Smart Doctor (Asus) or Precision (EVGA).

MSI AirForce. Click on the picture to enlarge.

The AirForce panel is of course a luxury item. It receives power from an internal or external USB port. After installing Lightning, you have all the tools you need to manage your graphics card with literally your fingertips. The surface of the panel is touch-sensitive, all changes are immediately transferred to the video card. Several rows of colored LEDs allow you to track the settings, the more they light up, the higher they are. When changes are detected, the Lightning window is displayed, which gives full characteristics of the exact frequencies of the video card, temperature and fan speed, as well as the voltage of the memory and GPU.

MSI Lightning.

There are three basic profiles to choose from: Game, Office, and Power Saving, with each profile configuring its own GPU, shader and memory frequencies. Your settings will be recorded in each profile, but if something goes wrong, you can always reset the card to the default settings (of course, the factory overclocking will be preserved).

By the way, the same goes for the “Game” software profile. Any overclocking is performed already above the level of the frequencies increased at the factory, while you can change the frequencies of the GPU, shader unit and memory separately. We reached a maximum of 680/1458/1050 (GPU / Shader / Memory), which doesn't seem like a big improvement over the stock 655/1404/1000 MHz, but remember that the regular GeForce GTX 260 runs at 576/1242 / 999 MHz.

The Power Saving configuration should also be mentioned as it can reduce the system's power consumption from 137W to 122W.

AirForce panel 2D modes Power Consumption (2D) Temperature (2D) Noise level dB (A) 2D
Game / Game 655/1404/1000 137 43 36,5
Office / Office 350/700/600 132 42 36,5
Power Saving 300/600/100 122 40 36,5
Game Maximum 680/1458/1050 137 43 36,5
Office Maximum 550/1,100/900 135 43 36,5

To get stable performance at higher clock speeds, you can further increase the memory and GPU voltages in the AirForce panel. In order for our sample to work stably at the final frequencies after overclocking, we had to increase the voltage to the penultimate position. Since you can only choose from pre-configured settings, it looks like the hardware can handle that level. The fan profile takes into account additional overclocking, and it starts spinning with a noticeably loud noise to cope with the increase in heat generation. So heating shouldn't be a problem. It was also quite nice to know that the memory is also being cooled.

Game Mode Min. Stable Max.
GPU voltage 1.0700V 1.1200V 1.1325V
Memory voltage 1.8500V 1.8800V 1.9000V

Sparkle Caliber. Click on the picture to enlarge.

Sparkle offers a similar product called the GeForce 9600 GT Caliber, which also has a panel. It connects to the video card through a separate loop, turning the panel into a control interface. But in the case of the Sparkle, the choice is limited to predefined profiles such as Green (power saving), Standard (stock clock speeds) and OC (overclocking).

A significant advantage of this approach is that the profiles are recorded directly in the panel / video card and transmitted via the cable, so that you do not depend on the driver at all. Therefore, you do not have to worry that any overclocking functions will not work in future drivers.

Tests: nVidia and GeForce 186.18

We used the highest overclocking level we got through the AirForce panel as the maximum setting. The use of third-party utilities does not make sense, since we had to increase the voltage for stable operation of the video card, and this allows the panel to be executed with the permission of MSI.

Overclocking mode Clock speeds (GPU / shaders / memory) Power Consumption (3D) Temperature (3D) Noise level dB (A) 3D
Standard (default) 655/1404/999 277 67,0 43,0
MSI D.O.T Captain 694/1488/1058 285 59,0 47,3
MSI Game Maximum 680/1458/1050 294 61,0 53,4

With the combination of MSI Lightning software and AirForce panel, you are independent of the graphics card manufacturer's driver. And the difference with the updated driver turned out to be quite noticeable when we ditched the old version of the MSI driver with D.O.T. and updated the driver to the latest version 186.18 at the time of the tests. Even at stock settings (factory overclocked), the new driver turned out to be faster than the MSI “Captain” mode, providing an additional 2 fps with active AA anti-aliasing. When overclocked to the limit (Game Maximum), the results are even better, the new driver gives a performance increase of almost 5 fps. If we compare the results obtained at the standard clock speeds with the results obtained at the maximum overclocking (Game Maximum), we will get a performance increase from 5 to 10 fps.

This time, the difference between nVidia's stock frequencies and the Game Maximum setting with maximum overclocking ranged from 8 to 16 fps. The gap narrows as AA levels rise. If the maximum overclocking gives an increase of up to 16 percent, then the transition to 8xAA reduces the advantage to 12 percent.

Introduction

It's nice when a manufacturer, when releasing a particular video card on the market, pays attention to additional pleasant little things in the form of proprietary software. EVGA, known for its non-standard approach to video cards, decided to support this tradition by releasing a very interesting utility. We were also interested in this event by the fact that Alexey Nikolaychuk, the author of the popular utility RivaTuner, had a hand in the creation of this program. It is no coincidence that in EVGA Precision, and this is the name of the newly-appeared program, developments and technologies known to RivaTuner fans have found their place. We bring to your attention a small overview of the utility for overclocking and managing EVGA Precision video cards.

Distribution and installation

Exclusively distributed with new graphics cards from EVGA. However, the company went further and made a big gesture for users of video cards of all manufacturers. The utility can be downloaded from eVGA website anyone interested by registering on it. The utility works well with all NVIDIA 6, 7, 8 and 9 series video adapters and works in Windows XP32 / 64 and Vista32 / 64 (requires administrator rights). The size of the program is just microscopic - 400 Kb.

Installation takes place without any problems and does not require any additional thought from users. Interestingly, when running RivaTuner Statistics Server the installer issues a warning message and cancels the installation. This is not surprising given the kinship of the programs. EVGA Precision has its own and for avoiding collisions, the joint use of two clone programs is stopped at the installation stage.

Examining the documentation

To the delight of casuals, there is practically none. There is a web help, but its use is demanded in very rare cases. This small help file contains information about supported video cards, system requirements, and a description of the functionality. Let's see what the program can do:

  • Quick and easy access to overclocking and fan control for novice users.
  • Control and hardware monitoring of the main parameters of the video card.
  • SLI support with synchronous overclocking and fan rotation control without any additional user action.
  • On-screen display with display of parameters during the game. Little? Then you need a "big brother" and you just outgrew this program. However, for a novice user - just right.

Interface

Almost all the functionality of the program fits in one window.

Monitoring "lives" in the window with the ability to scroll with the mouse wheel. The program itself determines the controller used and enters all possible data sources. Below are located:

  • checkbox for activating the autoloading program settings;
  • "TEST" button to test the settings;
  • aPPLY button to apply settings. Pressing the "i" button displays information about the video card and driver.

The wrench button requires more detailed consideration and we will return to it a bit later, and we will move on to the right side of the window, where the frequency control, including the shader domain, and the fan control are concentrated. The "Link" button selects the synchronous and asynchronous GPU frequency control modes, and the "Auto" button enables and disables manual fan control. Even below is the reset button for all settings.

Let's go back to our wrench. Behind him hides:

"General" window with control of program startup and minimized start.

Window for monitoring control (only the sampling rate is set) and on-screen display (on / off). The technology of displaying monitoring readings on the display of the Logitech keyboard, previously tested at RivaTuner, has also found application.

And there is no point in describing this bookmark. "Skinomania" will be happy. When the On-Screen Display is activated, the EVGA Precision On-Screen Display Server starts. In the published screenshot, I suggest that RivaTuner users play the game "find 10 differences":

But unlike its "big brother", EVGA Precision On-Screen Display Server is rigidly tied to EVGA Precision and is immediately unloaded when the main program is closed.

Outcome

Let's applaud the authors of the program for creating a simple and small in size and appetite tool for novice users. Undoubtedly, the utility will find its user, thanks to the most simple and understandable interface even without translation, and EVGA, it seems to me, will increase its influence on the minds of novice overclockers. The logo of the company blended very nicely into the interface of the program and who knows if your heart will tremble when you walk past the showcase with its video cards.
