history

Spa stamp, 1895

As a famous site of healing cold springs, the Spa has been visited as an erosion place since as far back as the 14th century. Although other springs of medicinal mineral springs have become known all over the world, it is the city of Spa, which has become the same name from any place that has a natural source of water believed to have special healing properties, such as spa ... The city of Spa grew up at that time in the oldest iron and became the center of the province of Liege. The "Ban Spa", was established around 1335 and included two metropolitan areas, "vilhe of Creppe" and "vilhe" Spas, 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the hotel. Steel industry before the exploitation of mineral waters, developed communication lines, which made it possible to develop a resort town.

Pliny the Elder noted that “In Tongrie, the country of Gaul, there is a well-known spring whose water, while bubbly, has a ferrous taste, which, however, is believed to be when we have finished drinking. This water cleanses the body, treats fever and dispels calculous feeling. "(With lib.XXXI VIII).

In 1559 she appeared in the famous work of Gilbert Lymborh “Acid fountains of the Ardennes forest, and above all those in the Spa. »It has been translated into Latin, Italian and Spanish.

As early as 1547, Agustino, physician to the King of England, Henry VIII, was visiting the Spa and helped to give knowledge to the world of the values \u200b\u200bof Spa water. In July 1565 the gentry of the provinces met at Spa under the pretext of taking water.

At the Aux Armes of England, the person present agreed to oppose the decrees of Philip II, which were severe and intolerant; this is the story "Compromise of the nobles."

1918 conference delivery.

During the Great War of 1914-1918, Spa was an important German convalescent hospital in the city between 1914 and 1917. The general headquarters of Kaiser Wilhelm II was in 1918, the last place it was located until its removal due to the surrender of Germany. In July 1920, she hosted the Spa conference, a meeting of the Supreme Council. German delegates were invited to this to discuss reparations.

World War II saw the Spa occupied by the Germans, but the city escaped the Battle of the Ardennes in 1945, which, fortunately for the Spa, stopped just at its gates.

climate

The Spa has an oceanic climate that is made more continental by its higher elevation and inland position compared to other Belgian climates at a lower level or closer to the sea. The Spa has relatively high rainfall all year round, with tricky weather something that the Spa-Francorchamps racetrack is famous for. The elevation also results in cooler summers and frequent frost in winter along with snowfall. The spa is rather gloomy all year round, although it averages both a drier and sunnier climate than the nearby places of Stavelot and Malmedite, which are also the surrounding circuit.

sights

Spa is a small Belgian town that has given its name to all existing balneological resorts in the world. Located at the border crossing of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, it attracts, among other things, by the peculiarity of its climate: the mild warm summer (average July temperature 16 ° C) contrasts little with mild winters (characterized by an average January temperature of 0 ° C). The comfortable climatic picture is completed by a modest annual rainfall, fluctuating within 1000 mm.

The glory of the discoverers of the healing waters of Spa, apparently, belongs to the ancient Romans. Apparently, the name of the city also originated from the Walloon word espa (translated as fountain). The relationship is quite convincing: the self-flowing springs, rich in carbon dioxide, present here, still refresh the atmosphere of the city square with their fountains.

However, the etymology of the toponym Spa can be traced back to another Latin word - spargere. It means "to bubble" in translation, it hints at the ability of carbon dioxide to release thousands of bubbles from the local water. In any case, the pleasant-tasting waters of ferrous springs, saturated with carbon dioxide, gained popularity among the Roman nobility due to their ability to heal ailments of various origins.

Having acquired the reputation of the "Cafe of Europe" by the 18th century, the resort was chosen by the British a century later. In memory of the peculiar colonization of Spa in those years, many streets are marked with English names, and among the best hotels, a particularly comfortable British hotel stood out. Another reminder of the proud Britons is the casino they opened in the Spa.

Despite its ancient roots, the Spa pays homage to the sporty style of modern times. There is a public swimming pool here, calling to relieve the stress of everyday life. In winter, ice skating and cross-country skiing are popular, and in summer ... A real freedom for adherents of an active lifestyle comes in summer. Suffice it to mention the possible rental of a mountain bike that makes the woodland of the suburbs accessible.

The old town of Spa is filled with the memory of the past, without forgetting the present times. In particular, the Horse Museum, the Museum of the "City of Waters", the Royal Castle of Reinhardstein - the property of the neighboring town of Malmedy, surrounded by the blooming hills of the center of carnivals, tell about the past. The roar of automobile engines overcoming the nearby Formula-I competition track, as well as the August theater festival and an artists' gallery, are broadcasting about today.

In the resort plan, the Spa owes its prosperity to seven mineral springs, whose waters are richly saturated with iron and carbon dioxide. The main procedures practiced by the spa are drinking cures and baths. A concomitant method is mud therapy, using the capabilities of ferruginous peat.

The main objects of therapeutic effects at the Spa resort are chronic cystitis, urolithiasis diathesis, chronic pyelonephritis, chronic prostatitis, urolithiasis, male sexual dysfunctions, chronic orchiepididymitis. The spa's drinking procedures are indicated for patients with iron deficiency states of various origins.
