The resorts of Baku belong to the group of resorts on the Absheron Peninsula - the southeastern end of the Caucasus Range. Almost all resorts are located at a distance of 10 to 35 km. from the capital of Azerbaijan (the so-called Baku agglomeration). There are both climatic and balneological resorts here. The former are located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, while the latter are located near healing springs.

History of the region as a resort education

Baku is the largest city on the coast of the Caspian Sea. Mentions about this reservoir, which is the largest lake in the world, are found in the annals of Ptolemy and Herodotus. The healing properties of the Caspian Sea, the wonderful seaside climate, and the abundance of fruits have made the Caspian region an attractive place for rest and treatment for a long time.

In the late IX-early XX centuries. climatic features of the Caspian coast near Baku attracted the attention of specialists involved in the treatment of consumption (tuberculosis). So, in 1911, Professor Guindes founded a bone-tuberculosis sanatorium for children from working families in the village of Buzovny near Baku - a health resort that is still operating to this day.

In addition, those wishing to improve their health were attracted here by healing springs and mud. Thus, in the legends of the Azerbaijani people, there are references to the wonderful properties of the Surakhani spring. In 1865, doctors became interested in the healing properties of the "hot spring" near the village of Surakhany. Full-fledged studies, which determined the possibility of using the thermal sulfate waters of the Surakhany spring in the treatment of various diseases, were carried out already at the end of the 20s of the twentieth century.

The prosperity of the Absheron Peninsula as a full-fledged resort area began in the Soviet period. In 1936, the Research Institute of Resortology and Physiotherapy was opened in Baku, on the basis of which studies of the resort factors of the region began to be carried out and recommendations for the treatment of various diseases were developed. They also searched for new sources. So, in 1940, during the development of oil fields near the village of Khanlar (10 km. From Baku), a new thermal source of sulphide waters was discovered. At present, the Shikhovo balneological resort operates here.

In Soviet times, many sanatoriums, boarding houses, rest homes were built in the vicinity of Baku, including children's anti-tuberculosis sanatoriums on the Caspian coast, as well as balneological hospitals. In 1970, according to the decision of the government of the USSR, the resorts of the Absheron Peninsula were recognized as resorts of all-Union importance.

In 2007, the government of Azerbaijan approved the state program "Resorts of Azerbaijan", which implies, among other things, the further development of the resorts of the Absheron Peninsula. Currently, a large number of sanatoriums also operate in the vicinity of Baku, many of which arose on the basis of health resorts created in Soviet times. Also, new health centers, holiday homes with modern equipment and convenient infrastructure are opening.

The healing factors of the region

The climate of the Baku resort region is characterized as a dry subtropical Mediterranean type. Mild winters (average January temperature + 3 ° C), warm dry summers (average July temperature + 25 ° C), an abundance of sunny days, slight daily fluctuations in air temperature - all these factors provide a comfortable stay at the resort for people with various diseases. Among the unfavorable climatic factors in the region, one can note a strong cold dry wind, the so-called "Baku Nord", blowing along the coast, and weakening in areas remote from the sea. It can be seen in both summer and winter months.

When treating at the resorts of Baku located on the coast of the Caspian Sea (for example, Bilgah, Buzovna, Mardakan, etc.), sea bathing is an important healing and health-improving factor. The swimming season lasts up to 6 months (from May to October). The beaches in the seaside resorts are covered with fine-grained golden sand. The air in the areas adjacent to the sea coast is saturated with healing ions contained in sea water - an important factor in the treatment of many diseases, especially respiratory diseases. The healing properties of the air are also due to the proximity of the Caucasus Mountains.

In the resorts of the Absheron Peninsula, both deciduous and coniferous trees grow abundantly, which also contributes to the saturation of the air with useful components. In addition, the climatic conditions of the region are favorable for the cultivation of fruit trees and shrubs. Here grow grapes, mulberries (mulberries), figs, pistachio, olives, pomegranates, apricots, cherry plums, etc. From the medical point of view, grapes (used in ampelotherapy), figs, and mulberries are of the greatest importance.

At the balneological resorts that are part of the resort agglomeration of Baku, which include Surakhani and Shikhovo, the main healing and health-improving resources are mineral waters, as well as mud, therapeutic mud of Lake Masazir.

The mineral waters of the Surakhani spring belong to the group of sodium chloride sulphide waters of a high degree of mineralization (up to 24 g / l): the content of free hydrogen sulfide is from 80 to 200 mg / l. Also, the water is rich in salts of iodine, bromine, potassium, calcium, etc., in its composition it is similar to Matsesta mineral waters.

The mineral waters of the spring located in the Shikhovo resort belong to the group of hydrosulfide waters, the degree of mineralization is about 15 g / l. The mineral water of the Shikhov spring contains a high concentration of hydrogen sulfide (free - up to 200 mg / l, bound - up to 400 mg / l), and is also rich in ions of iron, potassium, calcium, bromine, iodine. This is thermal water with a temperature of about 70 ° C.

Also, in many health resorts of the resort region of Baku, brine and curative mud of Masazir Lake, located 20 km away, are used. north-west of the capital of Azerbaijan. It is one of the eight salty pink lakes in the world, it is actively used both for economic (for salt extraction) and for medicinal purposes. Salt of the lake (brine), as well as black and gray silt, located under the salt layer, have healing properties. The main medicinal component of brine is sodium chloride, the content of which is up to 25%; it also contains salts of sulphate and magnesium chloride, calcium sulphate, etc. The mud of Masazir Lake is characterized as highly mineralized sulphide mud.

What is being treated in Baku?

The abundance of natural healing factors of the Absheron Peninsula and the Baku region provides opportunities for treatment at this resort for a whole range of diseases. Indications for treatment in climatic resorts located on the Caspian coast differ somewhat from indications for treatment in resorts located far from the sea and considered mainly balneological.

Such areas of treatment and recovery as climatotherapy, sea bathing, aeroionotherapy, heliotherapy (sun therapy) are the leading ones for climatic resorts. The climatic resorts include Bilgah (26 km. From Baku), Buzovny and the nearby resort Zagulba (32 km. From Baku), Mardakan and Shuvelan (36 km. From Baku), Pirshaga (25 km. From Baku), as well as some other resort areas.

Some climatic resorts have their own sources of mineral water (for example, the Mardakan resort has a source of iodine-bromine waters). In addition, imported water and mud from other regions, as well as naphthalan oil from the famous Naftalan resort are used for the procedures.

Indications for treatment at climatic resorts related to the Baku metropolitan area are:

  • Cardiovascular diseases (without severe heart failure) - atherosclerosis, hypertension stages I - II, rehabilitation after myocardial infarction, etc.
  • Nervous disorders: neuroses, neuritis, the consequences of previous infections with damage to the nervous system, vegetative-vascular dystonia, rehabilitation after strokes, etc.
  • Diseases of the respiratory system of a non-tuberculous nature: chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma in the stage of compensation, etc.
  • Diseases of the ENT organs (chronic tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media)
  • Tuberculosis of all organs, including children, - for these purposes, specialized sanatoriums in Baku are intended, which are available in the resorts of Mardakan, Shuvelan, Buzovny, Zagulba.

Mineral waters from local sources, as well as therapeutic mud and brine of Lake Masazir are key factors that are used for external procedures (baths, irrigation, wraps, mud applications, etc.) in health resorts at the balneological resorts of Surakhani (19 km. From Baku) and Shikhovo (10 km. from Baku). The indications for treatment at these resorts are:

  • Diseases of the musculoskeletal system: arthritis and polyarthritis (non-tuberculous origin), arthrosis, diseases of the spine, myositis, rehabilitation after injuries of muscles, tendons, joints, etc.
  • Skin diseases: neurodermatitis, eczema (without purulent complications), psoriasis, etc.
  • Diseases of the genital area in women and men: chronic inflammatory processes of the pelvic organs, adhesive disease, infertility, chronic prostatitis, etc.

Diseases of the cardiovascular and nervous system can be treated both in climatic and balneological resorts. Also, visiting the resorts of the Absheron Peninsula is useful for strengthening the immune system, saturating the body with vitamins (especially in the season of abundance of fruits, i.e. in the summer months), increasing the general tone of the body.

There are standard contraindications for treatment at the resorts of the Absheron Peninsula: infectious diseases in the acute stage, oncological processes, exacerbations of chronic diseases, mental disorders, any diseases in the stage of decompensation, bleeding, etc. It should also be remembered that sulphate water and mud, which are used for balneological x resorts of Baku, are contraindicated in the treatment of diseases of a tuberculous nature.

In order not to catch a cold due to the north wind (Baku nord), going to the resorts of Baku even in the summer, you need to bring warm clothes with you. It is often rainy in the region in autumn and winter, so it is recommended to bring waterproof clothing and shoes.

To enter the Republic of Azerbaijan, you need a passport. You need to apply for a visa only if you are going to stay in the country for more than 90 days. When going to a sanatorium for treatment, it is recommended to take a sanatorium card, the results of examinations.
